Question by Lucky: How can I make an inexpensive picket fence for a child’s bedroom?
I am trying to design a fun bedroom for a seven year old little girl. I really love the room shown in this link http://www.butterflycraze.com/gerber_daisy.php , but I am working on a serious budget right now and need an inexpensive way to create a picket fence. I checked local hardware stores and their fencing is way too expensive with the amount we need. I could stick to doing just one wall, but I would really like to do all of them. I don’t want to just paint it on the wall because the wall is textured and I also want to be able to tuck the flowers behind the fence posts as well as let her be able to display things behind them such as pictures and drawings. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas or if using foam board would work? My only concern with the foam is how sturdy it will be. Any ideas?

Try hardboard or 6mm plywood, make a stencil, slightly smaller than the uprights and draw round them.
If you want to go really budget, use cardboard and paint it with white emulsion! ( but just watch the edges !)

If you have a fence, but children persist in climbing over it to get their ball, even after you have told them and their parents that they are not allowed to do that, what is your liability if they get hurt in your yard? Does a no trespassing sign protect you?

Why I Finally Bought A Richell Pet Gate!

I really love my two dogs and having them in my home is a source of great joy for everybody. But, in recent years our family has expanded with the arrival of my two wonderful daughters and I started to consider the thought that perhaps I should restrict the access of my two poodles to certain areas of the house, especially the nursing room and the kitchen.

Before my motherhood I wasn’t exactly the “tidy” type. Don’t get me wrong, I was cleaning my house but I wasn’t preoccupied with germs, bacteria, insects and other creatures that are usually present in our homes, especially when a pet is living with you. Becoming a mother changed this a little bit (no wonder mothers are the preferred targeted audience for cleaning products).

Another thing that got me thinking was the fact that, with my daughters growing, we started inviting other kids to our home, and I soon realized that not everybody is comfortable sharing their space with our dogs. My two dogs didn’t understand why I was confiding them to certain areas of the house and why all of sudden they were not allowed to enter certain rooms anymore. This was all new to them and they didn’t exactly like it.

So, certain adjustment had to be made. A friend of mine suggested buying a pet gate. I must say I was a little hesitant at first. I didn’t like the thought of “imprisoning” my dogs, and watching them behind bars. The other thing was that the dog gates that I saw in my local store were awful plastic things, that didn’t seem very reliable or up for the task of containing my two poodles. On the other hand I was starting to be a little exhausted from trying to keep my dogs away from our sleeping rooms and kitchen. What made my definitely change my mind was seeing how well the pet gates had adjusted in my friend’s house and how nicely it blended in her home. Question by lil ndn jae: What can i put on my gate to keep my dog from chewing and digging around it?
She chews on the door b/c its wood and digs holes underneath it also. I want to know if there is something i can put down to repel her from the gate door? Maybe something i might have off hand?
I read its b/c she is bored. I try to watch her and catch her doing it but it is hard to watch her and clean my house at the same time. She stays inside but goes out to play or use the restroom. she has many toys but gets bored with them. She is a 4 month old boxer with alot of energy!

If she’s trying to dig under it, put some chicken wire on the ground to a distance of like 3 feet, and cover it with a light layer of dirt. She should quickly learn that she can’t dig through it. You may also consider wrapping wire around the bottom of the gate to keep her from chewing on it.

Why is she doing this? Is she unsupervised in the back yard? Does she live out there? Is she bored? Doing something to redirect her behavior would also be a good idea.

Prevent Your Dog From Jumping on People

Prevent your dog from jumping on you and your friends by changing the house rules.

Start teaching him the right way to behave inside.

The first topic to tackle is the house rules. When it comes to exuberant greetings, people have different opinions about what behavior can be permitted. The good news is that you get to decide and you can be inconsistent as long as you are consistently inconsistent. To do that, you just have to set simple yes/no rules and stick to them.

Yes you can jump on me. No you can’t jump on Aunt Ellen.

Once you have decided what the rules will be it’s time to break the news to your dog. Training tools are an easy way to make fast changed. Static electricity mats can be placed on furniture that you want to protect (they have the advantage of working when you are gone so you won’t end up with a napping dog when you are gone). Dog gates and crates can be used to restrict his free access to the door.

To break him of the habit of jumping on you at the door you have to be consistent and not respond with laughs, pats on the head, or scolding. Simply enter and, when he begins to jump up, tuck your arms in and turn in the other direction. Do not touch the dog to greet him or to push him off. Do not talk to the dog to greet him. Do say Down or Get Off in a calm, firm voice. Turn away and avoid rewarding the behavior.

When your dog tries to jump on you while you’re sitting, simply tuck your arms in and lean forward.

For dogs that have been jumping for a long time you will encounter an “extinction burst.” This means that he will try jumping more when you begin ignoring him because he is trying to get a response. This increase in the behavior will die out when it doesn’t get him what he wants.

If you will be allowing your dog to jump on you, but not on guests, then it is important to a) Give him a visual clue that says it’s okay to jump and b) Practice the Down or Get Off command so that he knows to put four on the floor when you tell him to. If possible, have a dog loving friend role-play as the visitor.

Additional steps to take include selecting a place for your dog to wait for guests to greet him and training him to sit on command no matter what the excitement level. If he’s sitting, he can’t be jumping.

In Penumbra Overture you come across a gate you need to open. Aside from not having power, or knowledge of the code, the one obstacle in the way is the dog behind it. Once you open this gate, you either run like hell, or make a stand. Well, instead of running about, or making a stand, I just put two gas canisters up against the fence, and waited for the dog to walk up to the fence. Once the dog begins to walk towards the fence, take out your hammer, and smack one of the canisters. Take cover. This may kill the dog or not, but it will wound it. This will get the dog very upset with your decision, and he will attempt to attack you. Simply walk up to the gate, wait til he gets close, and smash him good across his face. If all else fails, just give the thing some dynamite to play with. I’ve looked around on the internet, to see how other people solved this, they either killed it when it ran at them. They hid from the dog, or they trapped it in one of the containers. I killed the dog this way, because I really did not want to have that thing chasing me about. Sorry if it’s too dark, my brightness in the game is at 0.7.

My daughter taught her GSD to open the gate to the corral because I fussed at her for teaching him to jump over the fence. So, her solution was to teach him to open the gate himself. Now if she could just teach him to close it!
