Question by animal_mother: Need an Extra-Wide Dog Gate?
I’ve been looking online for an extra-wide (63″) and preferably taller baby/pet gate for my dog. I want to use this on the front porch and need it to be a tension mounted style..it will be placed between 2 brick columns. Anyway, I’m not having any luck finding what I need. If you have a gate like this..where did you get it?? I’m also open to any other creative options that will keep my Golden Retriever on the porch without his leash on if I don’t find a gate. Thanks.

What tends to happen when he goes through the gate? Does it mean play time is over? That could be one cause. If that’s it, try taking him through the gate for meals or take him through and then back out to continue the fun activity so he can’t associate going through the gate with recess being over.

Has he ever been knocked by the gate? That could make him cautious about going through. If that’s it, latch the gate open and feed him right in the middle of the opening several times to help him build a positive association and be very careful the gate doesn’t bump him in future until his confidence that it rarely happens is built up.

Kuranda Dog Beds, the Answer to the Chewing Dog Owner’s Prayers?

Got a precious doggie who loves to gnaw on his bed to the point of no recognition — and then look at you with these big eyes asking “where do I sleep now?” Kuranda USA offers a patented solution for your rambunctious pooch!

The Kuranda dog bed sports a patented design featuring a protective poly resin or aluminum sleeve which is also the frame that the fabric slides into. Cordura is a tough nylon canvas that is similar to the fabric used for horse blankets and backpacks. Then we have the 40 oz. vinyl which is the most durable and highly recommended for the digger, scratcher, chewer in your life! This sturdy fabric is thick and smooth with a very easy to clean surface. It like Cordura will not breathe and will puddle if rained on.

So has Chomper met his match? Kuranda dog beds are cot style beds that lift your precious pet off the ground between six to nine inches depending on the size of the bed. Many people are perplexed about which frame to get aluminum or poly resin? The answer to that question depends on the dog. The aluminum bed is the strongest and most durable especially for kennels, doggie day spas or veterinarian offices. The around the home dogs will be more than pleased on either the poly-resin or the aluminum beds. Kuranda also offers wooden framed dog beds which are nice looking and quite comfortable but are strongly not recommended for chewing dogs or for outdoor use.

Because Kuranda dog beds are cot style there is a space beneath the bed which helps keep his sleeping space sanitary. Oh that reminds me I haven’t mentioned how to care and maintain the Kuranda dog bed. Getting a new dog is exciting, but it is important that you take care of some important practical matters before you bring your new family member home. An untrained puppy or young dog can be destructive. If you plan ahead, however, you can minimize the damage to your home, and help keep your dog safe.

If your dog will have access to the kitchen and bathroom, it is a good idea to invest in a garbage can with a lid. This makes it much more difficult for your dog to get into the trash and cause a huge mess. If your dog is allowed in the kitchen, you should also make sure that you do not leave any food on the counter. Dogs will jump to surprising heights to get a snack, and certain foods can harm them. Onions and chocolate can be deadly to dogs. If you cannot keep your new pet out of the kitchen, make sure you keep the counter clear.

There are probably some rooms in your house where it would better for your new dog not to enter at all. You can close off certain areas with baby gates. With most baby gates, you will need to either step over them or take them down in order to get into the room. You can purchase higher end models that have a swinging door in the middle of the gate, making entry much more convenient. You should also make sure that you remove all poisonous plants from the house. Although you might close some rooms off with baby gates or special dog gates, having poisonous plants in the house is not worth the risk. It only takes a moment for your dog to eat enough of the plant to become seriously ill.

To keep your dogs in your backyard, you are going to need a fence. Make sure that the fence is high enough that your dog cannot jump over it. If you do not like the look of a wood or chain link fence, you should consider installing an invisible fence. An invisible fence is an electric barrier that surrounds your yard. Your dog will wear a special collar. If your dog goes past the barrier, the dog will receive a small shock. Although this shock is unpleasant, it does not cause the dog too much discomfort. It usually only takes a few shocks for the dog to learn his boundaries. You can use your invisible fence or traditional fence to section off areas where you do not want your dog to go.

When guests come over, you might want to have a place to keep your pooch for a while. Some of your friends might be afraid of dogs or severely allergic. Buy a cage or enclosure to put your dog in while guests are visiting. If you do not like the idea of buying a large metal cage, you could buy one of the new dog house end tables. These hold your dog but look just like a piece of furniture.

Nope. Her dog crossed the property line. She’s responsible for the vet bills of her own making by letting her dog put its nose where it didn’t belong. Don’t even offer to pay half. Your dog was on your property where it belonged and properly contained by the fence.

The fear will be difficult to overcome unless you encourage her that it is okay. Try sitting with her by the baby gate and put her in between you and the gate. She will realize it will not hurt her if you are showing her it is sturdy. Give her treats and praise her for short periods of time while she acts good near it.

Easy Steps For Dog Potty Training

Getting a puppy home is very exciting experience as if you saw your baby walking first. But be sure that you must know a few things before inviting this fur legged member to your home.

When you are taking an adult dog home. You can have a feel that he must have learned something from his previous master. But this is not so when you introduce a puppy to your home. You have to have patience to teach him everything from the scratch.

You will have to try all your skills to house-train a dog besides take some extra care and patience as this little puppy undergone no training as yet.

Most importantly, you would like the first things your little puppy learn are mannerism and eliminating outside house as well.

If you are impatient, potty training of a dog look like hell of a lot task as it will need them to behave like humans when they feel like potty.

First thing you are required to do in this regard is that you should not be harsh while potty training puppies. To begin with you should take you puppy outdoor for a walk just after you have fed him and must stay out till he lets it out.

Training should be given to wake up the same time every day and make him potty at the same place so that after sometime it transforms into a habit.

He should be given the food that leads to solid stools during the potty training period so that if it does potty inside hour, cleaning should not be a problem.

Also try bribing him things he likes after he learns going out for potty and deny these to him when he does not. This way he will be made to think that doing potty outside house is a better thing.

You should also ensure that he is put in a crate or within dog gates when you are not keeping an eye on him, so that he learns that he can’t relieve himself anywhere in the house.

You can always take help from puppy training book and videos.

However, if all these techniques fail in potty training your puppy, you can opt for a professional help at home or you can take your puppy to puppy training classes.

This is a video of my brother’s dog who figured out how to escape from my back yard during one of his visits. I have a Golden Receiver who is too large to do this so I just ignored the gap under the gate until the dog paid a visit.

i am looking to get a patterdale dog or a springer or one of a similar size. what height should i make the gate so they dont run away?
i know that fell is the proper name but its another name for it which doesnt mean its wrong. i meant that a patterdale is the smallest that i would have and a springer is the biggest

Pool Fences: A Must Have Pool Accessory

I am trying to design a fun bedroom for a seven year old little girl. I really love the room shown in this link http://www.butterflycraze.com/gerber_daisy.php , but I am working on a serious budget right now and need an inexpensive way to create a picket fence. I checked local hardware stores and their fencing is way too expensive with the amount we need. I could stick to doing just one wall, but I would really like to do all of them. I don’t want to just paint it on the wall because the wall is textured and I also want to be able to tuck the flowers behind the fence posts as well as let her be able to display things behind them such as pictures and drawings. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas or if using foam board would work? My only concern with the foam is how sturdy it will be. Any ideas?

Try hardboard or 6mm plywood, make a stencil, slightly smaller than the uprights and draw round them.
If you want to go really budget, use cardboard and paint it with white emulsion! ( but just watch the edges !)

If you have a fence, but children persist in climbing over it to get their ball, even after you have told them and their parents that they are not allowed to do that, what is your liability if they get hurt in your yard? Does a no trespassing sign protect you?

Why I Finally Bought A Richell Pet Gate!

I really love my two dogs and having them in my home is a source of great joy for everybody. But, in recent years our family has expanded with the arrival of my two wonderful daughters and I started to consider the thought that perhaps I should restrict the access of my two poodles to certain areas of the house, especially the nursing room and the kitchen.

Before my motherhood I wasn’t exactly the “tidy” type. Don’t get me wrong, I was cleaning my house but I wasn’t preoccupied with germs, bacteria, insects and other creatures that are usually present in our homes, especially when a pet is living with you. Becoming a mother changed this a little bit (no wonder mothers are the preferred targeted audience for cleaning products).

Another thing that got me thinking was the fact that, with my daughters growing, we started inviting other kids to our home, and I soon realized that not everybody is comfortable sharing their space with our dogs. My two dogs didn’t understand why I was confiding them to certain areas of the house and why all of sudden they were not allowed to enter certain rooms anymore. This was all new to them and they didn’t exactly like it.

So, certain adjustment had to be made. A friend of mine suggested buying a pet gate. I must say I was a little hesitant at first. I didn’t like the thought of “imprisoning” my dogs, and watching them behind bars. The other thing was that the dog gates that I saw in my local store were awful plastic things, that didn’t seem very reliable or up for the task of containing my two poodles. On the other hand I was starting to be a little exhausted from trying to keep my dogs away from our sleeping rooms and kitchen. What made my definitely change my mind was seeing how well the pet gates had adjusted in my friend’s house and how nicely it blended in her home. It was a Richell One Touch Adjustable pet gate that she fixed on her kitchen doorway opening. The gate was made out of wood, easy to use and sturdy enough to contain her dog.

The first few days they were looking how to jump over it or open it, but since they weren’t successful in either of the two operations, they just accepted the novelty. Question by lil ndn jae: What can i put on my gate to keep my dog from chewing and digging around it?
She chews on the door b/c its wood and digs holes underneath it also. I want to know if there is something i can put down to repel her from the gate door? Maybe something i might have off hand?
I read its b/c she is bored. I try to watch her and catch her doing it but it is hard to watch her and clean my house at the same time. She stays inside but goes out to play or use the restroom. she has many toys but gets bored with them. She is a 4 month old boxer with alot of energy!

If she’s trying to dig under it, put some chicken wire on the ground to a distance of like 3 feet, and cover it with a light layer of dirt. She should quickly learn that she can’t dig through it. You may also consider wrapping wire around the bottom of the gate to keep her from chewing on it.

Why is she doing this? Is she unsupervised in the back yard? Does she live out there? Is she bored? Doing something to redirect her behavior would also be a good idea.

Prevent Your Dog From Jumping on People

Prevent your dog from jumping on you and your friends by changing the house rules.

Start teaching him the right way to behave inside.

The first topic to tackle is the house rules. When it comes to exuberant greetings, people have different opinions about what behavior can be permitted. The good news is that you get to decide and you can be inconsistent as long as you are consistently inconsistent. To do that, you just have to set simple yes/no rules and stick to them.

Yes you can jump on me. No you can’t jump on Aunt Ellen.

Once you have decided what the rules will be it’s time to break the news to your dog. Training tools are an easy way to make fast changed. Static electricity mats can be placed on furniture that you want to protect (they have the advantage of working when you are gone so you won’t end up with a napping dog when you are gone). Dog gates and crates can be used to restrict his free access to the door.

To break him of the habit of jumping on you at the door you have to be consistent and not respond with laughs, pats on the head, or scolding. Simply enter and, when he begins to jump up, tuck your arms in and turn in the other direction. Do not touch the dog to greet him or to push him off. Do not talk to the dog to greet him. Do say Down or Get Off in a calm, firm voice. Turn away and avoid rewarding the behavior.

When your dog tries to jump on you while you’re sitting, simply tuck your arms in and lean forward.

For dogs that have been jumping for a long time you will encounter an “extinction burst.” This means that he will try jumping more when you begin ignoring him because he is trying to get a response. This increase in the behavior will die out when it doesn’t get him what he wants.

If you will be allowing your dog to jump on you, but not on guests, then it is important to a) Give him a visual clue that says it’s okay to jump and b) Practice the Down or Get Off command so that he knows to put four on the floor when you tell him to. If possible, have a dog loving friend role-play as the visitor.

Additional steps to take include selecting a place for your dog to wait for guests to greet him and training him to sit on command no matter what the excitement level. If he’s sitting, he can’t be jumping.

In Penumbra Overture you come across a gate you need to open. Aside from not having power, or knowledge of the code, the one obstacle in the way is the dog behind it. Once you open this gate, you either run like hell, or make a stand. Well, instead of running about, or making a stand, I just put two gas canisters up against the fence, and waited for the dog to walk up to the fence. Once the dog begins to walk towards the fence, take out your hammer, and smack one of the canisters. Take cover. This may kill the dog or not, but it will wound it. This will get the dog very upset with your decision, and he will attempt to attack you. Simply walk up to the gate, wait til he gets close, and smash him good across his face. If all else fails, just give the thing some dynamite to play with. I’ve looked around on the internet, to see how other people solved this, they either killed it when it ran at them. They hid from the dog, or they trapped it in one of the containers. I killed the dog this way, because I really did not want to have that thing chasing me about. Sorry if it’s too dark, my brightness in the game is at 0.7.

My daughter taught her GSD to open the gate to the corral because I fussed at her for teaching him to jump over the fence. So, her solution was to teach him to open the gate himself. Now if she could just teach him to close it!

It is sad these days how some parents raise their children. You are not the bad guy, they are. But they are making you out to be the bad guy cause they know you are right. That or they are embarrassed at their own child’s behavior and/or are in denial that their child would ever act that way.

“Boys will be boys” is just an excuse, and since when does that saying go when there is a girl involved? I’m sorry. That is poor, poor parenting on their part and they should be ashamed of themselves. That is not playing, that is torturing.

Good for you for calling the cops. And since the parents have such a disgusting attitude about it, i would do as much as i can (legally of course) to punish them for hurting my kids. And you should do the same.

I am so sorry this has happened to you and your children. Just ignore those who are giving your problems over it. If they can not understand your view in this, then they are lousy human beings. Good luck and i hope those parents are held liable for it.

BACKGROUND INFO:
Congress passed a law in August 2008 called the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA). This law came about because of the numerous recalls of children’s toys in the past two years and specifically the issue of lead in the toys. While I applaud the attempt at making children’s products safer, the law as stands, will actually remove many of the products that we have turned to in place of those made in China.

As of February 10th, 2009, ALL children’s products sold in the United States will need to be certified to be lead free and many products will need additional testing. To be certified, the final product sold needs to have each component on it tested for lead. This sounds wonderful when you think of all of the “Made in China” children’s products that are out there and all of the children’s items that are mass produced (mostly imported). HOWEVER, think of the handcrafted items sold within the US. Think of any children’s item that is a ready made item that has been personalized with a child’s name (it would need to be retested because it is the final sold product that needs to be certified). Think of the children’s items that are sold at craft shows, garage sales, ebay, consignment shops and fundraisers. As of February 10th, it will be illegal to sell any children’s products without certification, no matter when it was produced. Collectible vintage toys and trains? A “banned substance”. You will not be able to donate items for charity because they are a “banned substance” since they are not certified. This applies not only to toys, but all products such as books, shoes, clothing, school supplies, sporting equipment, jewelry, etc. that are possibly intended for children 12 and under.

Write to your congress person and your states senators. Ask them to sponsor a bill exempting domestic craft products from testing provided that the components are lead free.

Then contact everyone you know and know of involved in making and selling domestic craft products and ask them to do the same thing.

If enough people write enough members of congress corrective action will be taken.

If you like those things then get them… I think they are all fine.. its totally up to what you like. I personally for my daughter ended up buying everything made by graco for the storller careset swing and high chair.. for furniture we bought a madison collection from babies r us but they discontinued that set since i think cuz when we went back to get the toy chest everything was clearanced

Yeah, that is a good idea. I usually gate off a certain part of the house when I am gone to my dog has some freedom.

I have had the same gate for all my dogs over the years so I’m not even sure where it was from. Just search online for baby/pet gates. Most are adjustable from about 3ft across and up to at least 6 ft.

Dog Training Basics: Quick Fixes for 4 Specific Puppy Problems

Dog training isn’t difficult, but it does require consistency and the right methods. If you issue a command, do so with authority. Some commands are taught together to be effective. Once you know the secrets to basic dog training, advanced training will come much easier.

Here are solutions to some of the common problems new puppy owners face.

Before any dog training can begin, you’ll need a training collar and leash for your puppy.

1. Puppy runs out the door and won’t come back.

Until your puppy receives his dog training, the only solution is to ensure he can’t get out the door or gate. The sooner you teach him the proper commands, however, the sooner you can stop worrying about him escaping.

There actually are two commands that work together in this situation: sit or down, and stay. You’ll start by teaching your puppy to sit. Once he’s learned this, which shouldn’t take long, you can teach him to stay. So he doesn’t get confused, it’s best if you save the stay lesson until tomorrow.

Teach to sit:

Kneel or squat down beside your puppy. Keep the leash at a length of about two feet between the puppy’s collar and you hand. Gently but firmly grasp the spot on his back just in front of your puppy’s hips. Press down firmly to force his back end down while holding his head end up with the leash. While doing this, tell your puppy to Sit, making sure you emphasize the ‘t’.

Teach to stay:

There are two parts to the stay command. You’ll tell him to stay and block him with your hand. With leash in hand, stand beside your puppy so that you’re both facing in the same direction. Tell him to sit. He should have learned to obey this command in the “Teach to sit” instruction. Then, order him to stay while holding your flat hand about four inches in front of his face.

Be persistent with your dog training, but don’t work with him for more than 10-15 minutes at a time or he and you will become frustrated.

Don’t forget the consistent praises for a job well done.

Once he’s learned the sit-stay command, you’ll find lots of opportunities to use it, like when he jumps on people.

2. Puppy is destructive when he’s left in a closed room.

Being social animals, puppies hate being separated from the pack. The separation anxiety, fear and distress caused by being isolated causes him to chew anything in site. There are several, solutions. First, never use a barrier that he can’t see through, such as a door or piece of wood. Use a special dog gate or other such item that enables him to see the other “pack” members.

Putting a radio in the room can help, too. And don’t forget the toys.

3. Puppy eats shoes, socks and other clothing.

One mistake many owners make is to give their puppies old socks or shoes to gnaw. While this is great fun for the puppy, it sets you up for problems later on. What you’re essentially doing is dog training. He doesn’t know the difference between your clothes and the ones you give him. Never give your puppy socks or shoes. Provide him with proper puppy chew toys and special jaw exercisers.

4. Puppy won’t leave visitors alone.

Puppies love everybody and are anxious to show it. To break your puppy of this habit, teach him the sit-stay command. Of course, you can’t do that when company’s around. The sooner he goes through dog training, the easier it is to resolve these situations. After he’s trained, issue the sit-stay command whenever he jumps on people. In the meantime, simply put him in a confined area with a see-through gate until your guests leave.

Dog training is very important for a number of reasons. It saves you a lot of problems when certain situations arise. It gives you control over your puppy. In addition, it can save his life. Some owners are content just to teach their puppies the basics: sit, stay, come, fetch, and wait.

Once your puppy learns the basics, you can move on to more advanced dog training.

The rule of thumb – If you go through a gate then close it, but sometimes mistakes happen. Have you taken the time to teach your dog how to make the right choices in your yard? Is your yard more valuable then the world outside of the yard? Take a few minutes each day in your yard to pattern the behavior that the yard is the best place to be!

Does Your Dog Help Himself to Treats From the Cat Litter Box?

As strange as this sounds, it is a fairly common occurrence in households that have both dogs and cats living together. Since a cat’s meal is not totally digested, the feces may give off a strong odor, an odor that may be appealing to your dog. Totally disgusting to us, the fact is that dogs find this to be a “tasty treat”. 

Why do they do that? 

Many dog owners’ first question is, “Is this caused by a nutritional deficiency.” In a very few cases this may be to supplement a dietary deficiency. Although, in most cases it is found to be a habit of well nourished dogs and they seem to just like the taste.

Will it harm my dog?

Dog owners’ next concern is usually, “Will it harm my dog.” Although, it is felt that this behavior is certainly not a healthy one for your dog, most often it will not cause severe harm. You may want to have your dog checked by your veterinarian for intestinal parasites and if you are using “clumping” litter to assure that there are no intestinal blockages. If you notice any unusual symptoms or a change in eating or bowel patterns, consult your veterinarian and advise him of this discovered habit. In some cases, a cat will abandon using a litter box if a dog intrudes. To some pet owners this can be as serious a problem as the dog eating the cat feces.

How do I stop this behavior?

The best way to stop this behavior is to prevent access to the cat litter box by the dog. If your dog is larger in size than the cat, an easy solution is a cat litter box with a cover and an opening small enough for the cat to enter but that will not allow the dog access. Many pet stores carry this type of cat litter box. Another solution is to use a dog gate or a baby gate at the doorway to the room in which the cat litter box is keep preventing the dog access to that room. Position the gate off the floor enough that the cat can get under but the dog cannot. Another option is to put a chain on the doorknob attached to the doorframe in a length that allows the cat to enter but bars the dog’s entry. In the case of a small dog, you may have to position the cat litter box in a place above the floor where the dog cannot reach.

In Conclusion:

Having your dog eating cat feces may be a “tasty treat” for him but is a disgusting and unhealthy behavior. Your cat may also feel that this invades their privacy. The best thing to do is to prevent your dog’s access to the litter box. There are many other more suitable treats available for your dog to enjoy! Life without a Pet is a dull life indeed !!

I did a lot of research on this, then switched from Medela to the Lansinoh. I compared notes with the other women at my office who were pumping too, and they all agreed that the Lansinoh were best (some of them had used the ones you’re considering)

Bringing Your New Dog Home

You’ve probably noticed that taking care of a dog requires a little bit of planning and preparation. When making the decision to bring a dog into your home, it is important to have a good idea of what to expect and how to handle any potential problems that will arise.

Before You Pick-up Your Dog

Before you leave to get your new dog, take a look around the house. Make sure that objects you do not want him to chew are safely stored or have been sprayed with a bitter spray that is non-toxic and which discourages chewing. Identify the rooms that he will have immediate access to and close the rest of the residence off using doors and dog gates. These two steps are vital to preventing errors. By putting away the items he cannot chew and only giving him access to safe rooms at the start you prevent him from making mistakes. Set-up the area that will be his space. Most dogs enjoy resting in their own crate. The crate should be large enough for the dog to be able to stand up, turn around, and lie down in comfortably. If bringing home a puppy, purchase a crate with dividers that allow you to make it bigger as he grows. Set the divider so that he has enough room to move but not enough space to eliminate in one area and retreat to the other side. Add clean water and a chew toy with kibble and stuffing (peanut butter is popular) to his area.

Your Mindset

It is vital that you project the right leadership at the start. When you meet your new dog, be sure that you are calm and confident. Allow your dog to sniff at you and check you out before you make eye contact or touch him. Project a warm, authoritative energy that says to him that you are in control of things and that you will make sure he has a good life. Do not worry or even think about your dog’s circumstances up this point in life (especially if he is a rescue and you feel bad for him). Instead meet him with the right attitude – that you are a good, strong person who is committed to his well being and who will provide him with the things he needs to be healthy and happy.

Put on Your Sneakers

When getting a puppy you have to be extra careful until his vaccinations are complete. You may want to consider carrying your puppy from the car to the residence to avoid the risk of him stepping in doggy wastes that other dogs may have left in the yard. Take him directly to his area and set him down, giving him room to explore his space. Welcome him with attention and treats. If he knows a basic command or two, have him perform and give him the reward. If you’re adopting an older dog, then before you bring him inside, hit the road and welcome him with a long walk. Bond with him as you join him in exploring the neighborhood. Walk him for as long as you can (45-60 minutes would be great!) and then bring him home and into his new space. Provide him with the fresh water you’ve previously prepared and let him rest.

Shots, Tags, and other fun items

If you haven’t ordered one already, now’s the time to get him a nametag with his name, phone number, and address on it. In addition, you should take him to the vet to get a general evaluation as well as any shots he needs. Be aware that he might have picked up something at the shelter, so if you have other pets make sure they are up to date on their shots before you bring him home. If your new dog isn’t spayed or neutered then you should have this done, unless you have specific plans for breeding your dog. Evidence suggests that spaying or neutering can have beneficial impacts on the dog’s health and attitude as well as helping reduce the pet overpopulation problem. A proper diet is also important. Your vet can advise you on the best dog food for your dog and on his nutritional needs. Stick to this advice as eating a balanced diet is helpful toward proper growth and ongoing health.

House Rules

He may well learn to avoid chewing on your shoes, but what has he learned about chewing on your wallet? So make sure that you are showing him what to do.

House Training

Keep your dog in his area at the start. An easy to clean room – such as the kitchen or laundry room – is ideal. Keep your dog in his crate when you aren’t able to supervise him. Establish a schedule for taking your dog out to eliminate. Young puppies will need to go out once an hour. If they don’t eliminate at that time, bring them in and put them in their area. Check back in 30 minutes. When the dog is outside, encourage them to do their business. As soon as they do, reward lavishly (wait until they’re done). Once they’ve gone, give them a moment to play outside and then bring them inside for more play. Since you know they are empty, allow them into the previously forbidden rooms for a few minutes of fun. Repeating this process, especially the treats for eliminating, will quickly show your dog what you want and that ample rewards accompany that action.

Dog Training

It is important to enroll in a training program that will teach you and your dog. A good training program will provide you with the information you need about dog behavior and dog psychology while your dog is learning obedience cues and some fun tricks. Training is important for establishing lines of communication between you two as well as instilling discipline.

Get the Sneakers Back Out

Dogs need daily exercise. The level of activity needed varies depending on breed and age but all dogs need to get out and about. Take him for daily walks and spend time playing games with him.

Calm and confident Eager but ready to stay level when meeting the dog Ready to be in the moment, not worrying about his past (especially if he has a sad story that would make you feel bad – no need for that since his life is good now). Sneakers on for a big walk.

I have a Great Dane, who is gentle, doesn’t even bark at people, my kids and their friends are around her all the time. We rescued her and she had been horribly abused, so if anything she is very timid. She is in a fully fenced back yard. The fence is iron and has slats. There is a little boy that is 4 years old that plays at the park right next to our house, maybe 25 yards from our back yard. This child has thrown rocks at my dogs ( I also have a Chihuahua ) and teased them. So yesterday as he walked up to the fence, I told his mother that she needed to keep him away, Zee ( the great dane) was actually growling at him, I have never heard her growl at all. She said, yes, but if he gets bit, it will be your fault and I could sue you, since you don’t have her on a leash. I said, yes but she is fully fenced in and your child is mean. She said it didn’t matter and she was not going to tell her child not to go to my fence, that if I didn’t keep her on a chain, it was my fault.
Is this true? I mean my dog is fully fenced in and the child was reaching through the slats into our yard. She didn’t even tell him to stop, nothing. I took Zee in, but why should I have to, she likes to watch my children as they play. She has seperation anxiety and likes to be able to see us at all times.
Like I said, she likes to be in our backyard while my kids play outside at the park, which is right next door. I don’t leave her anywhere alone ( unless I leave the housed then she is inside) because she is so scared to be alone. If we are in, she is in, if we are out, she is out. But I have to be at the park with my three kids. She usually just lays by the corner nearest the park and watches us…until this kid comes around.

I don’t know what the laws are where you live, but can you stay outside with your dog when she’s out? My dogs are almost never outside unless I’m with them – safer that way. You might also let this mother know that you’re going to have her charged with trespassing if she or her kid step foot on your property. They’d have to be trespassing for your dog to be able to bite. But irregardless, you can’t let a dog who’s already been abused be subjected to any more abuse by someone’s out of control brat. Phone the police and ask whast you can do.

Seriously, I have never met anyone like her. No matter what I say, including the sky is blue today, she will say no it’s not. She’s six years old but has been doing it since she was four. I’ve tried time out, scolding, ignoring it. It has to stop. My dad teases me that she gets it from me but honestly, I was never that bad. Any advice?
I wouldn’t have any problem with her voicing an opinion but that’s not what she’s doing. Literally, she’ll ask me what I put in the soup and when I say I put in pepper she’ll say “no you didn’t”
I agree that punishing her probably is increasing the behavior but ignoring it wasn’t helping either.

i work with a girl who is autistic and she does this same thing to me. it makes me so mad sometimes. i just have to tell her that she can think whatever she wants to, but she’s wrong, and i don’t want to hear anything else about it. i also have to remind her every hour of the day that arguing with adults is the same as talking back.

Dogs are natural pack animals and will choose a leader of the pack, even if that pack is only 2 dogs. The basic way to keep peace is to let the dogs work it out.

From your standpoint, just make sure that each dog gets equal treatment, the same treats, the same attention, same everything.

I’ve tried searching for accorion gates online, and all I come up with are sites talking about how they’re dangerous for children and shouldn’t be used any more. Well, I don’t HAVE any children, so that doesn’t matter to me. What I need is a gate that will allow my cat to get into the bathroom to access her litter box but will keep my roommate’s dog OUT of the bathroom because he does his business in there on my floor and I’m sick of cleaning it up.

The accordian gate is the perfect solution because alothough the dog won’t fit through the openings, the cat will. Does anyone know where I can find one of these?

It’s ok–it has a spring sort of tightener (think tension rod), so it’s really easy to push it over. I’d go for a better one.

I would say you. Unless your lease states on the event you have a child they would provide child safety devices they are not at fault.

I am 20 years old. My boyfriend is 23 (closer to 24) years old.

He and I have been in a wonderful, steady relationship for two years. We get along well, and very, very rarely argue. We’re very compatible, and absolutely in love.

We plan to get married soon after graduating from college.

We live together in an apartment with our kitty. We’ve lived together for about nine months, and we love it.

We both attend school full time at the University of Washington.

I am an Early Childhood and Family Studies major, and a philosophy minor. I also have a background in psychology.

I plan to work as a professional nanny until I have my own child, at which point I would like to be a stay-at-home mom if money allows. This will likely be a feasible option, as the career my boyfriend is planning on getting into pays roughly ,000 to 0,000 a year.

I have worked as a nanny for over three years, for children of ALL ages (from birth to thirteen), and I love every age range. This has given me lots of experience taking care of children (yes, including diaper changes and tantrums) and I love every minute of it. I’m very good with kids.

I also read up about childcare and child development CONSTANTLY. I’m even subscribed to several parenting magazines. I know all about childcare, health and safety, the best baby products, milestones (and how to help a baby reach them), styles of parenting (I most closely identify with attachment parenting), birth, breastfeeding, emotional development – the list goes on and on and on.

We both really want one child. We have baby names picked out, we know exactly what we want the nursery to look like, we know which baby products we want, we know which values we want to pass on to our child, etc., etc., etc. We even have ideas for traditions we want to pass on or start as a family.

My boyfriend and I are NOT really into “partying.” We’re not the typical college students who like to drink and go clubbing – we’re not into doing the things people typically mean when they say “take this time to be young.” We like hanging out at home and just being together, and we enjoy dreaming of and planning our future. We’re extremely responsible, financially and otherwise (we’ve never been late on a single bill, if we use credit cards we pay them COMPLETELY off at the end of every month, we save money for the future, etc.). We’re intelligent and educated. We’re laid-back, low-key, and stable. And we have a lot of love to give!

I want a baby more than anything in the world – I wake up thinking about it most days. I can’t wait to be a mom and I love my future baby already. But I know that part of loving my baby is giving it the best life possible – which, for me, means waiting a few years until we’re both done with school, we’re married, we have a 2+ bedroom house, we have more money to spend, etc.

HOWEVER, I think about being a mom all the time, and I always wonder what it would be like in my current situation. This has left me extremely curious as to what people would think if I had a child. This is where you come in! Please answer the following questions:

1) If you DID know my situation (if you just skipped down to this question, please read what I wrote above to learn more about my situation), what would you think of my boyfriend and I having a baby? Would you think we were too young? Too inexperienced? Too irresponsible?

2) If you did NOT know my situation, what would you think? (Imagine you just saw a two people, who appeared to be about 20 and 23/24, with a baby. You knew nothing else about them.) Too young? Too inexperienced? Too irresponsible?

3) How long do you think we should wait to have a baby? What would you do if you were in our situation?

4) Do you think we will make good parents when the time comes?

5) Any other comments you’d like to make? I’d love to hear what you think!

There are a few things I’d like to clarify, since people have been mentioning them:

1) I DO plan to wait until we’re both finished with school.

2) I DO plan to wait until we’re married. And, yes, we DO plan to get married.

3) I HAVE talked about it with my boyfriend, and we ARE on the same page about everything.
4) To cathrl69: I’m really only asking out of curiosity. I just think about it a lot, and I wonder what people would think. It’s just a way for me to gain a little perspective in my life. As for your comment about me planning my parenting style, etc., I do see your point, and I agree to some extent. However, I just see it as my ideal. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with planning my goals as a parent – I realize that every child is different and things don’t always work out as planned, but I’ve learned a lot about the advantages of certain parenting styles (etc.), and I think it’s a great idea to keep those in mind – why not at least try for what seems best to me? Thanks for answering! :]
6) To cathrl69 again: I forgot to address your comment about money. We certainly don’t spend money we don’t have! In fact, we rarely use credit cards, and if we do, we pay the entire bill off at the end of each month – we only use them to build our credit scores! We’re very financially responsible – and frugal, too. I just mentioned his future career to add a little detail about my hopes to be a stay-at-home mom. I mentioned that it might not be possible, but that I hope it will.
